Mona Simpson’s My Hollywood

The Greenwich Library and Just Books welcome award-winning author Mona Simpson as she reveals the secrets behind her most cherished work when she discusses My Hollywood, as part of the AuthorsLive@GreenwichLibrary.

My Hollywood delivers the story of Claire, a stressed classical composer and East Coast transplant living, like Simpson, in Santa Monica. The stay-at-home mom struggling with the duties of motherhood enlists a nanny, Lola, a 52-year-old Filipino mother of five. As Lola stabilizes the rocky household, a story of the upstairs competition for the best nanny and the downstairs competition for the best deal unfolds. My Hollywood tackles the modern issue of whether it is possible to buy love for our children and what that transaction costs us all.

Simpson is the author of Anywhere But Here, The Lost Father, A Regular Guy, and Off Keck Road, which was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and won the Heartland Prize of the Chicago Tribune. She has received a Whiting Writers’ Award, a Guggenheim grant, a Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Writers’ Award and recently a Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Author Talk & Book Signing; Free and Open to the Public

The Greenwich Library and Just Books welcome Colman Andrews, a Greenwich resident and acclaimed cookbook author and co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Saveur, as he discusses and signs copies of his latest novel, Ferran: The Inside Story of El Bulli and the Man Who Reinvented Food. No other chef in history has been interviewed, written about, and parsed more than Ferran Adrià. And perhaps no other chef has given of his philosophy, recipes and revolutionary techniques as freely.

Award-winning food writer Coleman Andrews was given two years of unrestricted access to Adrià’s El Bulli kitchen, dining room, Barcelona workshop, family friends and associates. The result is a defining and revealing portrait of the chef in a historical and culinary context that addresses both his genius and the salient criticisms leveled against him. FERRAN demystifies, exalts, and thoroughly examines the man known as “the greatest chef in the world.” The El Bulli restaurant is located in the Catalan coastal hamlet of Cala Montjoi, near Spain’s boarder with France. Each year, 8,000 lucky dinners from around the world are able to eat at the restaurant – another 1 million are turned away from the 30-course revolutionary experience. Dinner at the restaurant, with its year-plus wait list, is arguably the toughest reservation in the world to score. Coleman Andrews was the cofounder and a former editor in chief of Saveur, and is the author of four acclaimed cookbooks, including Catalan Cuisine, which introduced the now-trendy cooking of Catalonia, Ferran Adrià’s home region, to American food-lovers. The recipient of numerous honors (including six James Beard Foundation awards), he was most recently the restaurant columnist for Gourmet. He divides his time between New York City and Connecticut.

GALE STEVES
RIGHT SIZING YOUR HOME: HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOUSE FIT YOUR LIFESTYLE

Book Signing; Free and Open to the Public

Just Books welcomes Gale Steves, former editor of Home magazine, and an established authority on everything to do with the home, as she introduces her newest book, Right-Sizing Your Home: How to Make Your House Fit Your Lifestyle.

Gale Steves shows how to make sense of those spaces rarely used and no longer suited to the way we live today. Unlike most home design books, each chapter in this beautifully illustrated book centers on a function in the home–such as bathing, relaxing, or eating–and helps readers assess their individual style and approach to each. Steves takes them through the entire process of Right-Sizing: providing worksheets to examine the uses and requirements of space, dimension guides to illustrate different spatial arrangements within rooms, the right way to measure, how to create a floor plan, and even a clever use for old grocery bags. Additionally, there are tons of inspiring ideas, hundreds of products that can help readers Right-Size on any budget, and a comprehensive list of resources making it easy to find everything featured in the book–everything needed “to make your house fit your lifestyle.”

The National Association of Home Builders has recognized Steves’ outstanding contribution to the building and remodeling field with a Certificate of Merit. She is listed in Who’s Who of American Women and was most recently inducted into the YWCA’s Academy of Women Achievers. Steves’ consumer magazine experience includes key editorial positions at Ladies Home Journal, American Home, and Woman’s Day, among others. She is also the author of several books, including Weekend Cooking and Home Magazine’s Best Little Houses.

THE RAGE OF ACHILLES
Terence Hawkins “THE RAGE OF ACHILLES”

Book Signing – Open to the public

Blood. Guts. Pride. Wrath.
The ancient clash of armies outside the walls of Troy is a cornerstone of Western literature. In The Rage of Achilles, Terence Hawkins brilliantly reimagines that titanic encounter. His stunningly original telling captures the brutality of the battlefield, the glory and the gore, in language that never relents. Raw and compelling, The Rage of Achilles tells the story of Achilles, a monstrous hero, by turns vain and selfish, cruel and noble; of Paris, weak and consumed by lust for his stolen bride; of Agamemnon, driven nearly to insanity by the voices of the gods; and of Trojans and Achaeans, warriors and peasants, caught up in the conflict, their families torn apart by a decade-long war. The Rage of Achilles is an exhilarating story that has captured the imaginations of readers for thousands of years restored to immediacy.

About the Author:

Terence Hawkins was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, into a family of coal miners. He graduated from Yale, where he was publisher of the Yale Daily News. After a year as a VISTA volunteer, he attended law school at the University of Wisconsin, and now works as a trial lawyer in Connecticut. Since 1995, his work has appeared in
Keyhole, Poor Mojo’s Almanac(k), Pindeldyboz, Eclectica, Megaera, and Ape Culture. He is a frequent contributor to the New Haven Register, and his work has appeared on Connecticut Public Radio. The Rage of Achilles is his first novel.

Rediscovering the Art of Living in the Heart of France
Ken McAdams

Two years and one home-renovation from hell into their marriage, Ken McAdams and Marian ‘Bing’ Bingham, head to the French countryside in an effort to renew their sanity and to celebrate their long-delayed honeymoon. Their destination: an off-season two-month rental tucked in the small village of La Montagne Noire (the Black Mountain) not far from Toulouse.

BON COURAGE is the story of that trip – one that extended way beyond two months and would change their lives in a way that two people already a ways down the road of life could not possibly have imagined.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Ken McAdams is a graduate of Yale and a former Marine Corps Naval Aviator who broke four world records and received decoration as the first civilian volunteer to fly Marines into Iraq. Pan Am’s youngest Divisional Chief Pilot, he was later appointed national Transportation Safety Board investigator and became Chief Operating Officer KIWI International Airlines before retiring to write full time. He lives in Greenwich, CT and France.

Dennis Vaughn “The Price of Revenge”

David Fox has a life anyone would envy-a flourishing career as a lawyer, a condo in Denver, and a beautiful girlfriend, Ellen-until he begins investigating a lawsuit against the Denver City Ballet. It seems like a commonplace allegation of misspent funds at first, but soon David finds himself caught in a web of blackmail, betrayal, and dark secrets. To escape, he’ll have to answer some uncomfortable questions: Who was responsible for the embezzlement, and how far will they go to cover it up? What precisely is Ellen discussing in those sessions with her psychiatrist? And is telling the truth worth losing everything? The Price of Revenge follows David across boundaries both professional and personal as he tries to find his way out of the maze of intrigue into which he has stumbled.
