From the Bruce:

“Last week marked the 50-year anniversary of the establishment by the Eisenhower administration of one of America’s most beloved natural treasures: the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, is celebrating the anniversary with the exhibition Arctic Sanctuary: Images of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge opening in March 2011, but first, this year’s Bruce Museum Youth Committee, called Youth@Bruce, is actively working to garner support for the show on the website Kickstarter.com.

The Youth@Bruce has just 20 days to reach their goal of raising $3,000 and they are looking for your help. Youth@Bruce is more than a third of the way there, gathering pledges of $1,227 to date. However, they will only receive their campaign funds if they reach their set goal.

“When you set a fund-raising goal with Kickstarter you must meet that goal to complete your project,” notes Gillis Baxter, co-leader of Youth@Bruce.

“The Youth Committee was inspired by Jeff Jones’ Arctic Sanctuary photos,” said Andrew Lewis, a junior GHS student and co-leader of Youth@Bruce. “We thought the beauty of his collection was a visual reminder of why it is important to preserve the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. We don’t want to see our National Refuges threatened by oil drilling. Sarah Palin brought this protected land to our attention during the Presidential election with her chanting, “Drill baby drill!” We hope through this exhibition that we can educate the public about the importance of continuing the protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and all our National Refuges for future generations to enjoy.”

The efforts by Youth@Bruce are being lauded by more than just Greenwich’s local museum. The international Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC), of which the Bruce Museum is a member, has recognized the group in its Youth Inspired Challenge program, a major new ASTC initiative designed to expand the impact of science centers and museums to assist youth to become the innovative and creative thinkers needed for the 21st-century workforce. This new ASTC program is inspired by President Obama’s goal of strengthening the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics knowledge of America’s students. In addition to numerous newspaper articles praising their efforts, they have received attention from “Arctic Live”, a non-profit organization established to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Youth@Bruce will be ambassadors for Arctic Live.

Andrew Lewis feels that their Kickstarter campaign has already been a success. “The advantage of this web-based campaign is for the Bruce Museum to become more environmentally friendly,” Lewis explained. “Also, by doing this, we want to broaden the scope of visitors to the Museum through our pledge rewards for the amount you donate. We are hoping that we are able to get donations from people who wouldn’t normally donate to the Museum. So far, we feel that is has been successful as we have received a lot of publicity because we are doing this innovative fundraising through Kickstarter. We are the first youth program and museum in Connecticut to use Kickstarter.”

“If you are not comfortable donating to an online campaign, you may send in a donation to the Bruce Museum membership office (203-413-6763), referencing the Youth@Bruce campaign, and we will honor your pledge level with the same rewards we are giving on our Kickstarter campaign,” Andrew Lewis noted.

Youth@Bruce is a group of about 16 high school students mainly from Greenwich High School but also Darien High, New Rochelle, and Greenwich CLP. Their use of the Kickstarter website, a funding platform that specializes in helping people fund creative projects, facilitates requests pledges for the exhibition and tracks their progress online. Youth@Bruce created a video for the website using images from the Arctic Sanctuary exhibition and footage from the US Fish and Wildlife’s new movie about the Refuge. The group also identified parameters for the site and drafted the selling points.

Your pledge of support for the Arctic Sanctuary exhibition is vital. Please visit Kickstarter at http://kck.st/cVupdu.

RAMP BRINGS A TASTE OF APPALACHIA TO AREA FOR AN EVENING OF FOOD, WINE, BOURBON AND CHARITY

Whole Foods Market® Partners with RAMP to Host Fundraiser on November 13, 2010

The Rockin’ Appalachian Mom Project (RAMP), founded by Greenwich resident and food and beverage entrepreneur Amy Guerrieri, is hosting an Evening of Food, Wine, Bourbon and Charity on Saturday, November 13, to raise funds for RAMP’s work in Appalachia. RAMP is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to making a difference in the lives of poverty-stricken children and families in the Appalachian region of the United States. The fundraiser event will be held Saturday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m., at Nelson Macker Fine Art, 168-A Irving Avenue, 3rd Floor, Port Chester, N.Y. Bill Evans, a Greenwich resident, Emmy award-winning meteorologist with WABC-TV, and New York Times best-selling author, will be the M.C. of the evening. Tickets for RAMP’s Evening of Food, Wine, Bourbon and Charity are $125 per person and are available online at www.RAMPAmerica.org.

RAMP’s mission is to provide basic needs and sustain food pantries that serve the neediest in the community, improve the nutritional well being of local residents, and create sustainability by mentoring income generating projects that will bring economic growth and lasting change. Working community-to-community, family-to-family, Mom-to-Mom, and kid-to-kid, RAMP can make a difference.

RAMP’s work in Martin County, Ky., one of the most poverty-stricken areas of the United States, has in a short-time, made a big difference to area residents – and RAMP’s work has not gone unnoticed. RAMP has been featured on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams twice, the Today Show, and ABC TV went this past summer to film an upcoming story on RAMP’s work. RAMP also received an official proclamation from the Governor of Kentucky Steve Beshear. This past summer, Whole Foods Market® learned about RAMP’s efforts and joined forces with RAMP bringing Whole Foods Market’s enthusiastic staff and resources on board to bring about nutrition education and lasting change in the Appalachian region. In honor of this partnership, Whole Foods Market is supporting RAMP at the November 13th fundraiser by providing all of the food and wine, and its management staff, who will be busy manning the pizza oven and serving up Westport Aquatics Oysters, Hand-carved White Oak Pastures Grass-fed Beef, Severino Handmade Pasta, Artisanal Cheese & Antipasti including Capriole, Jasper Hill, Divina & Coach Farms, Wood Oven Pizza and Kentucky Heritage Menu samplings.

Amy Guerrieri, who just returned from a trip to Martin County, Ky., where RAMP worked with a team of healthy eating specialists from Whole Foods Market installing salad bars in the public schools and conducting nutrition seminars for Martin County residents, is thrilled to be able to bring a taste of Kentucky to her hometown area. “RAMP has had an incredible 18+ months working in Kentucky,” noted Guerrieri. “A group of volunteers from the CT/NYC area have been down there numerous times, working with the local residents and trying to help them with their nutritional needs. The people of Appalachia are so appreciative of our efforts to help. And now, to be able to bring the Appalachian heritage and story up to the New York area will be a great experience – and one that will open the eyes to many about the dire issue of poverty – here in the United States.”

For Whole Foods Market, one of the company’s core values is to support its communities. The Whole Foods Market Mid-Atlantic region became involved with RAMP as it dedicated one of its regional leadership team building days to working with RAMP in Martin County, Ky., holding food drives, and building a large community garden and chicken coop. Since that time, Whole Foods Market has been supporting RAMP and its efforts in Appalachia through RAMP focused food drives in its stores, providing its nutritional expertise and leadership, and working with RAMP to develop plans to bring economic and sustained change to the Appalachian region.

“At Whole Foods Market, we tend to dream big,” said Ken Meyer, regional president of the Whole Foods Market Mid-Atlantic region. “When we heard about RAMP and its big dreams for making a difference in the lives of poverty-stricken children and families in Appalachia through nutrition and sustainability, we knew a partnership with RAMP would be an incredible and fulfilling journey for our company and our team members. Whole Foods Market is in a unique position to be able to help RAMP through its relationships with food and wine vendors and we are thrilled to play a part in raising funds on November 13th for such an inspiring organization.”

Amy Guerrieri, founder of RAMP, is a busy mother of four and entrepreneur. She founded the Rockin’ Appalachian Mom Project last year after she was inspired by watching a television special entitled “The Hidden America.” Guerrieri is the CEO of a beverage company that makes the Rockin’ Water™ brand, a children’s fortified water. She created Rockin’ Water to make a difference in kids’ lives and knew that when she saw the plight of children in Appalachia, a mere day’s drive from her home in the New York area, that she had to do something. Now, after forming RAMP, Rockin’ Water is also involved and donates to RAMP two cents from every bottle sold.

RAMP’s unique approach to the Appalachian community was felt immediately – instead of trying to solve the huge problem of poverty, RAMP took the initiative to work community-to-community, family-to-family, Mom-to-Mom, and kid-to-kid. By mentoring several families that were truly in need, and aligning RAMP with the schools and a food pantry that served a large, but manageable group of families, RAMP has made a measurable difference in the lives of these families in a short period of time. Something different about RAMP too is that it has a dedicated group of volunteers that will remain with the Martin County, Ky., community until these families are able to sustain themselves. RAMP travels to Kentucky every couple months, bringing a group of volunteers Guerrieri calls her “Mom Brigade,” and focuses on three areas of need: basic needs (food), nutrition (education & resources), and sustainability (gardens, chicken coops and helping the community create an income generating and sustainable business model). To learn more about the Rockin’ Appalachian Mom Project, visit www.RampAmerica.org.

Whole Foods Market is the leading natural and organic food retailer and currently has more than 280 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Whole Foods Market was recently honored with the International Association of Culinary Professionals “Culinary Youth Advocate of the Year” and received an Award of Excellence for its effort to help improve school lunches for children nationwide with the “School Lunch Revolution” awareness campaign.
