Book signing at 2:30 pm.
Lecture 3:00 to 4:00 pm

On July 1, 1893, President Grover Cleveland boarded “Commodore” Elias Benedict’s yacht (of Greenwich fame) in New York Harbor, headed out to Long Island Sound and vanished for five full days. Journalist E. J. Edwards caught wind of the story through a chance encounter on Greenwich Avenue and employed some topnotch investigative skills to ferret out the incredible truth regarding Cleveland’s whereabouts. The trouble was that no one believed him, and not a single person would step forward to back up Edwards’ story for another 24 years. Why did President Cleveland (whose motto was “tell the truth”) lie about his disappearance, and why did he launch a campaign to vilify Edwards in order to keep it a secret?

Find out when author Matthew Algeo appears at the Greenwich Historical Society for the debut of The President Is a Sick Man, a lecture and book signing. With a cast of characters that reads like a “who’s who” of the Gilded Age, Mr. Algeo’s work recounts the anatomy of an incredible cover-up in the atmosphere of a particularly volatile period in our economic and political history. Author Matthew Algeo is a Pew Fellow, an award-winning international public radio journalist and author of two other books, Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure and Last Team Standing.

Montgomery Pientum
Sunday, April 10, 2011
2pm

A 3-mile hike and enjoy the natural beauty of Cos Cob protected by generous gifts of open space given to the Greenwich Land Trust, Audubon Greenwich and the Town of Greenwich over a 40-year period. Together, these properties comprise a contiguous area of 115 acres of woodlands, streams, and ponds in the center of Greenwich.

The hike will start at the 55 acre Montgomery Pinetum given to the Town of Greenwich by Colonel Robert Montgomery in 1953, then continues through Audubon’s 26 acre Caldwell Sanctuary given by Mildred Caldwell in 1972 and finally into the Old Stone Bridge Preserve given to the Greenwich Land Trust by the Jill Montgomery Trust in 1992. This continuous greenway in central Cos Cob provides excellent wildlife habitat, protects Strickland Brook from pollutants, and provides the many benefits of open space to Greenwich residents. Enjoy the majestic trees and the impressive rocky outcroppings, and look for the signs of early spring along the way with the help of naturalists and guides.

Parking at the Montgomery Pinetum. Parts of the trail are steep and may be wet. Hiking boots and insect protection strongly suggested. Free. Refreshments will be served.

Co-Sponsors: Greenwich Land Trust, Greenwich Tree Conservancy, Audubon Greenwich, Town of Greenwich

8pm

Fresh off its successful February production of “A Heart Day’s Night,” Two Turkeys Productions is getting set for its next staged reading event: “March Madness: A Night of Crazy Comedies.”

Slated for the evenings of Friday March 11 and Saturday March 12, at 8pm, at Diamond Hill United Methodist Church is Cos Cob. The troupe will present a lineup that includes an array of, as they call it, “madly funny” one-acts.

“Our audiences had a great time at the February show, and we had a great time performing for them,” said Don Adams, a co-founder of Two Turkeys, “so we’re duplicating that successful format with a very funny quartet of one-acts.”

Adams and co-founder Lori Feldman will be joined on stage by “guest turkeys,” fellow local actors Ellen Krinick and Bob Waters of Stamford and Janice Pasqua of Easton. Frank Petrilli of Stamford directs the production.

Tickets (perhaps the county’s biggest theater bargain at only $5 each) can be reserved in advance by calling the box office at 203.829.4767, or can be purchased at the door. Refreshments will be served after the show, and audience members are invited to chat with the cast.

“From This Day Forward: Looking Back at Greenwich Weddings,” a major new exhibition, explores wedding celebrations from colonial times through the mid-twentieth century, using individual wedding stories to illuminate the larger history of the community. It examines how wedding traditions have changed over generations, influenced by historical events and trendsetters alike. The show also delves into the origins of today’s elaborate “white wedding,” which emerged as a result of Queen Victoria’s choice of nuptial attire in 1840.

Treasures on display include spectacular wedding dresses from different eras (one worn by five generations of Greenwich women), period photographs (including one taken of 87 Greenwich brides in front of Christ Church for a 1964 Bulova watch advertisement), original prints and paintings, invitations, albums and announcements — all from the Greenwich Historical Society Archives and Museum and private collections. The exhibition features a gown from an Italian-American family setting down roots in Cos Cob as well as wedding items from the Binney, Benedict, Mead, Reynolds, Ferris and Seton families.

Hours: Wednesday through Sunday, Noon to 4:00 pm

Admission: Adults $10, Seniors and Students $8, Members Free, Children 6 and under Free

A Lecture by Historian Missy Wolfe
Tuesday, January 25, 2010, 7:00 pm

Greenwich historian and author Missy Wolfe will explore the Puritan politics of the 1640s that threatened the life of Elizabeth Winthrop Feake Hallett, Greenwich’s English female founder. This illustrated lecture, held in conjunction with the Historical Society’s current exhibition, From This Day Forward: Looking Back at Greenwich Weddings, looks at how Winthrop was used as a political pawn between battling New Haven and Connecticut colonies, how she challenged the conventions of the day and how she moved from New England to Dutch New Netherland to save her family.
