As St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside nears the end of a nine month, three million dollar renovation/restoration, the church is celebrating with a performance of Handel’s Messiah, featuring its Festival choir, members of the Greenwich Symphony, soloists soprano Elisabeth Franklin, Tracey Martineau, Connie Bowman, mezzo soprano Abby Powell, tenor Michael Imbimbo, and Baritone David Bennett. The performance will be conducted by Music Director Mark Kaczmarczyk.

The capital campaign to perform extensive renovation of the physical plant began more than two years ago, when a group of parishioners approached Msgr. Alan F. Detscher, Pastor, with the proposal to repair and restore the complex in anticipation of the parish’s one hundredth anniversary in 2013. The complex includes a 500 seat church, parish hall, parish offices and priest’s residence, and school, which currently provides Religious Education classes to more than 800 children on a weekly basis.

“I was astonished and delighted when members of the parish donated more than three million dollars for the Capital Campaign, during the height of the financial crash in the fall of 2008,” said Monsignor Detscher. “The generosity and involvement of the parishioners during this project has been extraordinary.”

The renovations include replacement of the slate roofs on the church and rectory, repointing of the bricks, replacement of heating and air conditioning systems in the church, and interior painting. Most noticeable will be the extensive updates to the church hall, in the basement of the church. Previously neglected when the church was built due to lack of funds, the parish hall now boasts state of the art lighting, extensive wainscoting, and the installation of an elevator servicing the main church and hall. Like all renovations, accommodations were made during the updates. The parish spent a hot summer without air conditioning, and leaks in the roof were numerous leading up to the repairs.

As the parish approaches its one hundred year anniversary, the over 2,000 parishioners can now begin to enjoy a completely renovated complex, beginning with a performance of Handel’s oratorio Messiah, on Friday December 2nd at 7:30 pm, 4 Riverside Ave, Riverside. Fair For ALL

The Fair will include its annual Book Fair, popular among book collectors and dealers, on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. In addition to traditional carnival rides and games, the Fair will feature the Garden Gate (plant sale), a bake sale, and the Kids Fair (Saturday 10am-3pm). For several generations, the Friday night opening of the Fair has been known informally as “first date night,” when young teenagers from the eastern part of Greenwich come to the fairgrounds to hang out and enjoy some wholesome fun with friends.

Fair For All is unique among area fairs in that all money raised supports third-party charities rather than the event’s sponsor. Every year, St. Paul’s donates 100 percent of the proceeds from the event to non-profit organizations, locally and around the world. In recent years, St. Paul’s has provided financial support to Greenwich area groups such as Neighbor To Neighbor, Kids In Crisis, St. Luke’s Lifeworks in Stamford., Family Centers’ The Den For Grieving Kids, and Greenwich Adult Care, and also contributed to relief efforts in response to the earthquake in Haiti, the tsunami in the Indian Ocean, and Hurricane Katrina.

This year, St. Paul’s has decided that funds raised above and beyond existing charitable contribution commitments will go to support the National Audubon Society in its response to the Gulf oil spill. “With St. Paul’s parishioners living primarily in the seaside neighborhoods of Riverside and Old Greenwich, we understand how important the health of the ocean is to the well-being of coastal communities,” said Rev. Jim Erwin, who recently joined St. Paul’s as curate. “Humans are the only creatures on earth who make conscious choices about the way we impact the world around us, and even though Riverside is more than a thousand miles away from the oil spill, we feel a responsibility to do what we can to help put right the environmental disaster unfolding in the Gulf.” With oil washing up on Louisiana beaches and seeping into the state’s vast wetlands, a growing number of National Audubon Society volunteers and staff members are rushing to the region, ready to help with wildlife rescue and clean-up, monitor the spread of the spill, and begin planning the long-term effort to restore Louisiana’s coast. Among the Audubon experts soon to be on the ground in the Gulf is Connecticut resident Erin O’Connell, a professional animal rehabilitator from Audubon Sharon. She will be tending to injured wildlife and participating in the cleansing process of oiled wildlife.

North Mianus School Invites the Community to its 59th Annual PowWow

The North Mianus PowWow will once again take place on Friday, April 30th from 4:00-10:00pm and on Saturday, May 1st from 12:00-10:00pm at North Mianus School in Riverside, CT.  One of the first big carnivals to kick-off the spring season,  the PowWow has long been a tradition in the community, appealing to young and old, current students, alumni and visitors alike.

Stewart Amusements will offer its most popular fairway rides, including the ferris wheel, the Ali Baba, Dizzy Dragons, bumper cars, and more.  A highlight of the PowWow is always the live music played by popular local talent and high school bands, with this year being no exception.   There will be games of chance, exciting raffle prizes as well as, many other family-friendly activities like the popular ball toss game to win goldfish sponsored by House of Fins and the tantalizing dunk tank.   Traditional carnival foods will be available such as, hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, fries, soft drinks and more.   Of course, the carnival experience would not be complete without stopping by the Bake Sale tent to tempt your taste buds with an array of scrumptious, home-prepared sweets.

2009 Carnival of Fun Fundraiser

Starting Tuesday, Aug. 11, St. Catherine of Siena Church will hold its annual Carnival of Fun fundraiser.

The carnival will offer a special deal this year – $20 for a bracelet for any ride until the carnival closes for the day at 11 p.m.

An array of performers will be featured each night, with two bands new to the main stage, Summer Lost and Short Bus.

On Aug. 11, the Sound Beach Community Band is scheduled to perform, followed by Billy and the Showmen. On Aug. 12, Summer Lost will be on stage, after recently playing at Stamford’s Alive@Five. On Aug. 13, Short Bus, a popular cover band, will play. On Aug. 14, the Francesco Castiglione Band is featured and, on Aug. 15, attendees will enjoy Music by Tony Reno.

The raffle prize this year is a black 2009 BMW convertible coupe as the grand prize and with tickets now at $25, down $5 from last year.

Gates open each day at 6 p.m. and great Italian food will be offered on all five nights.
