of Dawson’s archival quality black & white and color prints.

About the artist:
Joel Dawson has divided his time to return to his roots as an artist after more than two decades as a creative director to some of the best known names in the beauty industry.

About the sculptures:
Joel meticulously balances rocks one atop of another to create natural sculptures along the shoreline at
Greenwich Point — no glue, no rods, no pebbles… just balance.

About the photographs:
Wind and waves take away the transient shoreline gallery; the photographs help the images live on. Joel’s work has been called “unique in both subject and texture, capturing the majestic quality of man in harmony with nature.”

Prints: Available at the gallery or by contacting Marcos Torno, owner of Images, at 203-637-4193.

The Artist’s Story

The natural landscape of Greenwich Point is inspiring to many of its visitors. But every once in a while, the rocky scape along the shoreline is transformed into a sculpture garden of meticulously balanced rocks. Where do these mysterious constructions come from? They are the inspired work of Old Greenwich resident and designer Joel Dawson, who, after more than two decades as a creative director to some of the best known names in the beauty industry, has return to his roots as an artist.

Sculpting with stones found at Greenwich Point began as a fun, creative way for Dawson to spend time with his two children when they were very young. In the past couple of years, Dawson has taken stone sculpting to another level. In the early morning before sunrise or in the late afternoon when the light is at its best, he heads to the beach. Guided by the sun, the weather, the wind, and the tides, and inspired by the rock shapes, Dawson begins to construct – balancing one rock atop another. “There’s no glue, no rods, no pebbles… just balance,” Dawson explains. “It is about what you find and what you want to make of it. The magic is when you let the rock go, and it just stays…” he says on his Web site, www.greenwichpointrocks.com.

2:00-3:00 pm

The Bald Eagles of Homer, Alaska – A special photo presentation by Dan Burns

Audubon Greenwich will host renowned sports photographer, Dan Burns, for a special show featuring his series of bald eagle photos. These striking images from Homer, Alaska show an unusual gathering where dozens of bald eagles come together each winter. He will also show the audience his high-powered lens and other equipment he uses for both his photography.

Dan has been a contract photographer for the NY Giants and/or the NFL for 30 years and his work also features many celebrities, including Glenn Close, Brooke Shields, Richard Nixon and Bob Hope. One of his favorite moments was taking photos of the famous ‘helmet catch’ during the 2008 Superbowl when the NY Giants played against the New England Patriots. His images from that moment, the eagles photos he will show this weekend, and many others are on his website at www.danburnsphotos.com.

This event will be fun for all ages and no RSVP is required. Suggested donation: $4/adult. $2/kid.

5 Days of Givin’ & Grinnin’ Event
Dec 14th through 18th
9am to Noon Each Day

Annie Watson Photography is hosting a donation drive of packaged diapers and jars of baby food from December 14th through 18th (Monday through Friday) from 9am to Noon each day at 428 E. Putnam Avenue in Cos Cob. Donations will be given to three local organizations, Kids in Crisis, Neighbor to Neighbor, and the United Way, following the drive to help mothers and babies in need.

In conjunction with this donation drive, Annie Watson will be offering free photo sessions for 6 to 12 month old babies and will be having a “best baby photo” contest to support the donation drive. “My primary goal,” say Ms Watson, ” is to gather as many diapers and jars of baby food that I possibly can during those 5 days. I encourage everyone in the community to make a diaper or baby food donation even if they do not come for the photo session or do not have a 6 to 12 month old baby. Jars of baby food are only 99 cents each!”

People who cannot come during the designated hours to make a drop off, are encouraged to call Ms. Watson at (203) 485-0565 or email AWatsonPhoto@aol.com to make other arrangements for a drop off. For additional information, please visit www.anniewatsonphotography.com/DecDonationDrive/. A minimum donation of one package of diapers and 20 jars of baby food are required for the complimentary photo session and to enter the “best baby photo” contest. Prints will be available for purchase for those that are interested.
