Greenwich YMCA To Host Olympic Swimmer Cullen Jones for Swim Clinic

2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Cullen Jones

The YMCA of Greenwich will host 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Cullen Jones for its Spring Swim Clinic.  Jones is the second African-American to hold a world record in swimming and is the third African-American to make the US Olympic swimming team.

At the 2008 Olympic swimming trials, Jones broke the American record in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 21.59. In the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, he won a gold medal in the 4×100 m freestyle relay in a world record time of 3:08.24 with Michael Phelps, Jason Lezak and Garrett Weber-Gale.

Jones will be working directly with the athletes to enhance their technique and skill level. The fee is $100/swimmer and registration is still open. For more, contact Jonathan Mayer at jmayer@gwymca.org.

The Department of Parks and Recreation announces the dates of organizational meetings for the Men’s Slow-Pitch Softball Leagues. Any new teams desiring to enter a League for the 2012 season must attend the appropriate organizational meeting.

The Industrial League will hold a meeting on Monday, February 27th at 6:00 pm. This meeting will be in the Cone Conference Room on the Second Floor of Greenwich Town Hall on Field Point Road. Industrial League teams are comprised solely of male employees who work full time year-round at the Greenwich Office of a Greenwich based company, which must sponsor the team.

Town Resident Teams will also meet on Monday, February 27th at 7:30 pm. This meeting will also be in the Cone Conference Room on the second floor of Greenwich Town Hall. New teams and new managers to the Town League are welcome to remain after the meeting for a question and answer session. The Town League teams are comprised only of Town of Greenwich residents or past residents that qualify under an “exempt status” provision. Town Resident Leagues normally play on either Thursday or Friday Evenings each week and play is currently scheduled to begin the week of April 23rd.

League structure, League rules, equipment, fees, eligibility, playing rule changes and playing dates are among the many items to be discussed at these important meetings.

3 ON 3 HOCKEY JAMBOREE

Join the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich at their annual 3 ON 3 HOCKEY JAMBOREE! This is an annual fundraising event that draws adults from the community for competitive play. This year’s two day event will feature a live performance from The Zambonis, Connecticut’s own indie “hockey” rock band set to release their new record, Five Minute Major (In D Minor). Cost of registration is $1,500 per team of up to six (6) players and a goalie. If you cannot provide a goalie, we will have one for you. Food and entertainment will be provided at the Club. $50 per family spectator tickets for the event will be sold online and at the door. There will be FREE admission for each registered player and his/her family. Winners receive trophies and bragging rights for a full year! The Department of Parks and Recreation announces that registration for Coed T-Ball will begin BY MAIL ONLY, Monday, February 27, 2012. There are two separate T-Ball programs. Five-year-old T-Ball is for children that will turn 5 by April 30, 2012. This program will use the T for hitting through out the program.

Six-year-old T-Ball is for children who will turn 6 by April 30, 2012. This program will be a combination of coach pitch, and use of the T. Children turning 7 years old by April 30, 2012, are not eligible. Please see the Parks and Recreation Small Fry program for information for those children.

The program will meet on Saturday afternoons April 28th – June 9th at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center Field. Each Saturday afternoon there will be a practice, and a three-inning game. The cost of the program is $87 and includes a team shirt and hat.

The Department of Parks and Recreation announces that the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center is registering children in 1st – 4th grades for a basketball clinic during the School break winter recess Monday, February 13 – Friday February 17, 2012.

Boys and Girls in first – fourth grades will come from 9am – 12 noon. They will be split up according to ability and age, and taught basketball fundamentals and skills.

The program will be under the direction of John Czarnecki who has coached basketball at GHS, the Greenwich Flames, and the Boys and Girls Travel Teams. He currently is working with many HS and travel players in the area to improve their basketball skills.

So come to the Civic Center for some basketball fun. Space is limited, sign up early. The cost for the 5 day program is $225.00.

The Department of Parks and Recreation announces registration for its Winter Youth Basketball Programs.  They will once again be offering a Co-Ed Program on Saturdays at the International School at Dundee Gym for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.  There will also be a program at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center for children in kindergarten through third grade.  In addition, we will have a program that is exclusively for girls on Sunday afternoons at the International School at Dundee Gym, covering first through eighth grades.  All programs begin the weekend of December 3-4, 2011, and run through the weekend of February 4-5, 2012.  The snow dates will be Saturday, February 11 and Sunday, February 12.  There will be no meeting on the weekends of  December 24-25, 2011 and December 31, 2011 and January 1, 2012.

The Co-Ed Programs are designed to teach the basic skills of basketball and to help players sharpen their existing skills.  Game strategy, rules and sportsmanship are stressed and in-house game play is included at every level.  The groups are kindergarten and first grade, second and third grade, and fourth through sixth grade at IS@Dundee.  Sessions for kindergarten and first grade and second and third grade are offered at Bendheim W.G.C.C.

The Girl’s program also aims to teach the basic skills of basketball and to help players sharpen their existing skills.  The groups are:  first through third grade, fourth and fifth grade and sixth through eighth grade.  Informal team play will be held at the first through third grade level.  There will be more emphasis on game play including half court games at the fourth and fifth grade level.  The sixth through eighth grade program will include full court games incorporating the players registered for that level.

Registration may be done by mail now.  They will begin in person registration at the Recreation Division Office, on Monday, October 31.  You may download registration forms at the Town’s website, www.greenwichct.org.  Click on Check out Parks and Recreation and click on Youth and Adult Programs.  The in person registration hours are Monday through Friday, 8:15 am – 3:45 pm in the Recreation Office on the Second Floor of Town Hall, 101 Field Point Road.

There is a $105.00 per child registration fee and each participant will receive a program t-shirt.  Sneakers, athletic socks and shorts or sweat pants are required for all participants.

The Department of Parks and Recreation announces that there are still a few openings in its 9 &10 yr old Summer Baseball Program. Anyone who has turned 9 on or before April 30, 2011 and not already be 11 by that same date can participate. Games are on Monday and Wednesday nights.  Rainouts are played on Friday evenings.

Applications are available at the Parks and Recreation office located on the 2nd floor of Town Hall.  Players will be placed immediately.   For more information please contact 203 618-7649.

The Town Tennis Tournament will be held over a three-week span beginning July 16.  The finals will be at Binney Park on July 30, with a rain date of July 31.

There are divisions for men, woman, singles, doubles, mixed doubles, youths 17 and under, and youths 12 and under.

The divisions are broken up into open division 18 to 34 years, 35 and over, 50 and over.  Participants may register for one, two or three events.  The fee is $25.00 per event for singles players, $40 per event for doubles teams.
