“Island Beach formerly known as Little Captain’s Island, is situated in Long Island Sound about two miles south of Greenwich Harbor. Access is by ferry from the landing at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park off Arch Street in central Greenwich. Parking is available across Arch Street. The ferry runs from the second Saturday in June through September 15. One of the Town’s oldest public parks, the island was purchased by the Lauder Family and given to the town in 1918 as a memorial to George Lauder, Jr.

A remnant of terminal moraine formed by the last glacier about 12,000 years ago, the island lies about 3,500 feet due east of the larger Great Captain’s Island, and is connected by a 600-foot long tombolo, or intertidal sand bar, to Wee Captain’s Island, a privately-owned half-acre island off its easterly side. Other natural features include spartina marshes on the south side, and some mud flats at low tide, which can be used for nature study. Wildlife is somewhat limited, with Herring Gulls predominating and occasional migratory shore birds visiting.

The island boasts almost 1,000 feet of fine sandy beach on its northern and eastern perimeters. There are designated swimming and boating areas and a lifeguard. On the island itself are picnic tables, grills, snack bar, covered shelters, (one formerly a carousel), dressing rooms and restrooms. With refreshing breezes to be captured from all directions, Island Beach offers an ideal retreat from summer’s heat. It is one of the Town’s most treasured facilities.”

2009 Overnight Camping Information

Reservations can be made for the 2009 Summer Season beginning at 8:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2009. Permit holders must be 21 years of age or older, and must be part of the picnic group or overnight group that they are reserving. Reservations must be made in person at the Town of Greenwich, Department of Parks and Recreation, 2nd floor, at least 2 weeks prior to date of reservation. A $30.00 Non-Refundable Reservation Fee (cash or check) is required at time of reservation to secure a date along with proof of residency.

Island Beach:

* Non-Refundable $30.00 Reservation Fee required to secure date.
* Proof of residency is required before permit will be issued ( two weeks before event) Current Park Pass, Greenwich Boater ID Card, or Drivers License in conjunction with current phone or electric bill will be accepted as proof. MUST BE 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER TO MAKE RESERVATIONS AND BE PART OF THE GROUP ON THE RESERVATION DATE.
* Cost: $8.00 per person Camping Fee. This fee does not include Guest and Ferry Ticket fees, these can be purchased at the Ferry Dock.
* Guest Fees: $5.00
* Ferry Fees: $3.00 per person (16 yrs. – 64 yrs.)
* Ferry Fees: $2.00 per person (5yrs. – 15 yrs.)
* Ferry runs 7 days a week on the hour 10:00am – 7:00pm Mon. – Fri. June 14-Sept.15, 2008.
* Ferries run on the half hour Sat. and Sun. and Holidays June 28- Sept. 1, 2008.
* Starting Wednesday, Aug. 20th last ferry leaves main land at 6:00pm. When taking your private boat, residents must have Park Passes, Non-Residents must have Individual Day Passes that can be purchased by the resident at the Beach Card Office or Eastern Greenwich Civic Center.
* Permits issued for overnight camping only.
* Only one night per family per season.
* No pets.
* No weddings permitted.
* Area available June 14 – Sept 15, 2008
* Grills, picnic tables, bathrooms, and showers available.

* Holds up to 25 people per night (can be up to 3 separate groups)
* Cost: $8.00 per person Camping Fee. This fee does not include Guest and Ferry Tickets, these tickets can be purchased at the ferry dock.
* Guest Fees: $5.00
* Ferry Fees: $3.00 per person (16 yrs. – 64 yrs.)
* Ferry Fees: $2.00 per person ( 5 yrs. – 15 yrs.)
* Ferry runs Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon according to tide.
* Overnights can be booked for Mon, Tues, Wed and Thurs if resident has their own boat. When taking private boat, residents must have Park Passes, Non-Residents must have Individual Day Passes that can be purchased by the resident at the Beach Card Office or Eastern Greenwich Civic Center.
* Permits issued for overnight camping only.
* Only one night per family per season.
* No Pets.
* No weddings permitted
* Area available June 14 – Sept 7, 2008.
