“Island Beach formerly known as Little Captain’s Island, is situated in Long Island Sound about two miles south of Greenwich Harbor. Access is by ferry from the landing at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park off Arch Street in central Greenwich. Parking is available across Arch Street. The ferry runs from the second Saturday in June through September 15. One of the Town’s oldest public parks, the island was purchased by the Lauder Family and given to the town in 1918 as a memorial to George Lauder, Jr.

A remnant of terminal moraine formed by the last glacier about 12,000 years ago, the island lies about 3,500 feet due east of the larger Great Captain’s Island, and is connected by a 600-foot long tombolo, or intertidal sand bar, to Wee Captain’s Island, a privately-owned half-acre island off its easterly side. Other natural features include spartina marshes on the south side, and some mud flats at low tide, which can be used for nature study. Wildlife is somewhat limited, with Herring Gulls predominating and occasional migratory shore birds visiting.

The island boasts almost 1,000 feet of fine sandy beach on its northern and eastern perimeters. There are designated swimming and boating areas and a lifeguard. On the island itself are picnic tables, grills, snack bar, covered shelters, (one formerly a carousel), dressing rooms and restrooms. With refreshing breezes to be captured from all directions, Island Beach offers an ideal retreat from summer’s heat. It is one of the Town’s most treasured facilities.”

Fifth Annual Greenwich Harbor Yacht Showcase,
October 1-3, 2010

Boutique Yachts, Luxury Cars, Private Aircraft Displays and More

The Fifth Annual Greenwich Harbor Yacht Showcase, one of the most prestigious boutique yacht shows in the northeast, will dock at the Delamar Greenwich Harbor, October 1, 2 and 3. This year’s event promises to be the most impressive yet, with a unique collection of both power and sail yachts, plus a wide variety of land exhibitors, from luxury automobiles to private aircraft displays.

Visitors can catch the first look at the extraordinary yachts at a kick-off preview party to benefit the 12 metre Yacht Development Foundation, Friday, October 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring entertainment, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The showcase continues Saturday, October 2, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, October 3, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Advance tickets are recommended. A one-day VIP pass for Saturday or Sunday plus admission to the preview party is $65 per person. A two-day VIP pass for both Saturday and Sunday plus admission to the preview party is $75 per person. Or general admission tickets are available for $15 per person for Saturday or Sunday. There is no charge for children 12 and under. Enticing cuisine from l’escale will be available for purchase on Saturday and Sunday, along with an international beer garden. For tickets, visit www.thedelamar.com or call 203-531-3047.

“This year’s showcase will be our best yet and should provide an incredible experience,” said Stephanie Summerall, Director of Sales and Marketing for the Delamar Greenwich Harbor. “In addition to spectacular yachts, visitors will also enjoy our many land exhibits offering an eclectic mix of luxury products and services.”

Showcase participants include The Sunseeker Club, Inc., Friendship Yacht Company of Rhode Island, Luxury Yacht Partners of New York, Heritage Yacht Charters, Morris Yachts, J. Catalano & Sons of Greenwich and more. Featured yachts include two 12 metre America’s Cup yachts which are under the care of the 12 metre Yacht Development Foundation, established to restore and preserve these historic vessels and their racing heritage. The Sunseeker Club is bringing a 2011 60 Predator, which is making its Northeast debut, and a 2011 64 Predator. Friendship Yacht Company will feature the FRIENDSHIP 40, a luxury daysailer which uses push-button sailing, all handled by one person. A 52-foot Sea Ray from Luxury Yacht Partners of New York and two Grady-Whites from J. Catalano & Sons are only some of the other extraordinary yachts on view.

There will also be opportunities to board the 12 metre yachts for an excursion on the breathtaking Long Island Sound. These special one to two-hour sails will be based on demand and require a minimum of six passengers. Donation prices are $150 per person or $1,000 for 10 passengers. For reservations, call 203-656-1182. Or visitors can take a one-hour champagne cruise on the Barton & Gray Mariners Club Hinckley Picnic Boat, a fiberglass, downeast-style lobster boat powered by a jet drive with a deck, railing and cabinetry crafted with handmade mahogany and teak wood. There will be six champagne cruises; three on Saturday and three on Sunday for up to six people, perfect for corporate entertaining or a friends or family get-together. The price for the one-hour cruise is $500. It includes two bottles of champagne, hors d’oeuvres from Whole Foods and a gift from Heidi & Arthur Chocolatiers for each passenger. For tickets, visit www.thedelamar.com

Visitors will also be able to view five of the newest automobiles from Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich, including, if available, the SL550 Night Edition, one of only 100 in the country. In addition, Bombardier’s Flexjet will show how private air travel can become a reality through its fractional ownership and card programs. Other exhibits include Beth Madison Photography, Betterliving Sunrooms, Equinox of Greenwich, My World of Magnets, Pepsi, artist Peter Arguimbau, Stamford Healthcare Associates, Stamford Sports & Spine and more. Sponsoring the Greenwich Harbor Yacht Showcase are the Delamar, Derecktor, which recently debuted Cakewalk, the largest yacht ever built in the United States, l’escale restaurant bar, Impression Point, Inc., People’s United Bank and Vinylume, Inc. Media sponsors include Moffly Media, AM1490/WGCH and 103.9/WFAS.

With its picturesque setting, the Delamar Greenwich Harbor, which was named “one of the best new hotels in the world” by Condé Nast Traveler, provides a blend of European elegance and refinement and prides itself on personal services. The Greenwich Harbor Yacht Showcase is produced by TMK Sports & Entertainment LLC, an event-marketing company.
If you make it to the Oyster Festival (see post below) and have more time, continue up the seashore and take a guided tour of historic Black Rock Harbor aboard the 40’ Navy launch, “Chief”. From the deck of “Chief”, view the beautifully restored Black Rock Lighthouse (built in 1823) and Penfield Lighthouse, said to be haunted by the ghost of a former keeper! Passengers can also enjoy scenic views of the local yacht club, the old Fayerweather Lighthouse and other historic sites. Tours are given weekends from May through September. Weekday groups and school tours are available. Please call the Seaport Office at 203.335.1433 for more information before heading out.

If your travels take you even further up the seashore, off the coast of Branford are 26 inhabited islands – The Thimble Islands, first discovered by Captain Adrian Block in 1614. You can take a 45 minute narrated sightseeing tour of these wonderful islands on the Sea Mist, a 44-foot Carman boat of Chesapeake design.
