About the artist:
Joel Dawson has divided his time to return to his roots as an artist after more than two decades as a creative director to some of the best known names in the beauty industry.

Joel meticulously balances rocks one atop of another to create natural sculptures along the shoreline at
Greenwich Point — no glue, no rods, no pebbles… just balance.

About the photographs:
Wind and waves take away the transient shoreline gallery; the photographs help the images live on. Joel’s work has been called “unique in both subject and texture, capturing the majestic quality of man in harmony with nature.”

The Artist’s Story

The natural landscape of Greenwich Point is inspiring to many of its visitors. But every once in a while, the rocky scape along the shoreline is transformed into a sculpture garden of meticulously balanced rocks. Where do these mysterious constructions come from? They are the inspired work of Old Greenwich resident and designer Joel Dawson, who, after more than two decades as a creative director to some of the best known names in the beauty industry, has return to his roots as an artist.

Sculpting with stones found at Greenwich Point began as a fun, creative way for Dawson to spend time with his two children when they were very young. In the past couple of years, Dawson has taken stone sculpting to another level. In the early morning before sunrise or in the late afternoon when the light is at its best, he heads to the beach. Guided by the sun, the weather, the wind, and the tides, and inspired by the rock shapes, Dawson begins to construct – balancing one rock atop another. “There’s no glue, no rods, no pebbles… just balance,” Dawson explains. “It is about what you find and what you want to make of it. The magic is when you let the rock go, and it just stays…” he says on his Web site, www.greenwichpointrocks.com.

My family and I, spread out across North America, want to thank the town of Greenwich for helping to put on the annual Island Beach Two Mile Swim every August. We grew up in the waters off Greenwich, so this has been a yearly reunion for us for a long time. It’s a great event, put on by great people. In particular, Jon Harnett, the race director and head of the Greenwich Swim Committee (GSC), is a terrific guy.

I do quite a few ocean swim races in Southern California, where I live. My brother Tony and his daughter Hollie, a SUNY Potsdam first-class competitive swimmer, also compete in the ocean near their home in the Norfolk, Virginia, area. Our other brother is Tom, a scuba dive master who lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. All of us converge on the dock off Arch Street every second Saturday in August for one of our most fun days of the year.

Please know that we appreciate Greenwich and the GSC for all you do to make this day happen, and for all the effort that goes into maintaining the facilities on Island Beach just like they were when we were kids. (Probably better now)

Scott Heimer
