The popular Bruce Museum Outdoor Arts Festival, which takes place on the grounds of the Museum, is a juried event featuring more than 85 artists from 20 different states across the country. Paintings, drawings, original prints, mixed media pieces, sculpture and photography are all available for purchase directly from the artists.

From 12 noon to 4 pm both days there will be live music by the band Ubuntu, a rootsy rock ensemble, as well as classical solo guitarists Ed Wright and Annalisa Ewald. A children’s drawing contest and family art activities are offered free inside the Museum, and a variety of food choices will be available outside. At 2 pm both days, pastel artist Carol Boucher will give a pastel drawing demonstartion and will invite audience participation. Her booth is set up right in front of the Museum entrance.

ART SHOW RECEPTION: COSTA RICA:  Images from the Land of Pura Vida – Photography by Karen Ann Sullivan

Karen Ann Sullivan is passionate about documenting life in all its variety, whether the subject is large or small, exotic or familiar.  A lifelong lover of nature, she is always searching for subjects that convey the beauty of the world around us.  Being able to capture and ultimately share these moments with others is Karen’s constant source of inspiration. An avid traveler, Karen has embraced the photographic opportunities she has encountered in the Galapagos Islands, Ireland, Australia, Fiji, Costa Rica, Canada, and many locations in the United States.

The images for this show were taken during two trips to Costa Rica; the first in July of 2009, the second in January of 2010.  The focus of Karen’s travel was to photograph a variety of Costa Rican nature and wildlife, and then display and share it with others.  She traveled to the following regions in Costa Rica; Caribbean, Northern Lowlands, Central Highlands, Central Pacific, and a small part of Guanacaste.

About Costa Rica:
Costa Rica is an amazing place for the nature lover, and specifically for bird enthusiasts.  With approximately 10% of all the world’s bird population able to be seen in Costa Rica (both indigenous and migratory), and the size of the country making it easy to see many diverse ecosystems in a short period of time, this country was an amazing place to experience. In addition to 12 different life zones in the country, they also boast approximately 50 different hummingbird species, and 1,000 butterfly species.  With one of the highest percentages of protected land in the world, Costa Rica has approximately 25% of its land in National Parks and other protected areas. The diversity of two coastlines, rainforests, cloud forests, temperate rain forests, multiple volcanoes, and much more, gives visitors a wide variety of opportunities for natural experiences and wildlife viewing.

About Karen Sullivan:
Striving to present her work in the fullest possible way, Karen always includes informative wall captions in her exhibitions.  They may discuss details of a subject’s habits or history or specifics about how the photograph was captured.  Karen’s goal with the majority of her work is to display the subject of each image as she saw it through her lens.  Each of these images was taken digitally and only minimally processed.  Some Series of Karen’s images have been additionally processed to attain specific results.

Karen has studied at the International Center of Photography in Manhattan and the Westchester Art Workshop in White Plains, New York.  In addition to taking formal classes, Karen has also attended workshops and seminars on lighting, Polaroid transfers, travel photography, and other topics.

This reception will feature a raffle to benefit Audubon & SPCA to be held at reception. Tickets will be sold at the reception.  Cost: $5.00 each.  Prize:  Fiery-throated Hummingbird 8″x12″ Image printed on canvas with a floating frame.

About the artist:
Joel Dawson has divided his time to return to his roots as an artist after more than two decades as a creative director to some of the best known names in the beauty industry.

About the sculptures:
Joel meticulously balances rocks one atop of another to create natural sculptures along the shoreline at
Greenwich Point — no glue, no rods, no pebbles… just balance.

About the photographs:
Wind and waves take away the transient shoreline gallery; the photographs help the images live on. Joel’s work has been called “unique in both subject and texture, capturing the majestic quality of man in harmony with nature.”

Sculpting with stones found at Greenwich Point began as a fun, creative way for Dawson to spend time with his two children when they were very young. In the past couple of years, Dawson has taken stone sculpting to another level. In the early morning before sunrise or in the late afternoon when the light is at its best, he heads to the beach. Guided by the sun, the weather, the wind, and the tides, and inspired by the rock shapes, Dawson begins to construct – balancing one rock atop another. “There’s no glue, no rods, no pebbles… just balance,”  Dawson explains.  “It is about what you find and what you want to make of it.  The magic is when you let the rock go, and it just stays…” he says on his Web site, www.greenwichpointrocks.com.

Artists Series: Timeless Images by Vincent A. Campanella, M.D.

Dr. Campanella is a retired medical imaging consultant and has been an avid photographer over 40 years, the last 12 as a professional. His diverse subject matter features everything from fine art, nature and still life, to portraits and architecture. He strives to capture dramatic natural light and color but also enjoys exploring the interplay of light and shadow tonality in his approach to black and white images. All works on display are for sale, and part of the proceeds will benefit the Greenwich Historical Society.

Grab your gear and hit the trails with renowned sports photographer, Dan Burns, when he visits several of Audubon’s local sanctuaries. This is a great chance to get outdoors with other photographers, share photography tips, and witness the wilderness hiding just outside our backdoor.  Ideal for practicing scenic photography and close-up (macro) photo techniques useful for flowers, insects and other small items.

Dan has been a contract photographer for the NY Giants and/or the NFL for 30 years and his work also features many celebrities, including Glenn Close, Brooke Shields, Richard Nixon and Bob Hope. One of his favorite moments was taking photos of the famous ‘helmet catch’ during the 2008 Superbowl when the NY Giants played against the New England Patriots. The Bald Eagles of Homer, Alaska – A special photo presentation by Dan Burns

Audubon Greenwich will host renowned sports photographer, Dan Burns, for a special show featuring his series of bald eagle photos.  These striking images from Homer, Alaska show an unusual gathering where dozens of bald eagles come together each winter.  He will also show the audience his high-powered lens and other equipment he uses for both his photography.

Dan has been a contract photographer for the NY Giants and/or the NFL for 30 years and his work also features many celebrities, including Glenn Close, Brooke Shields, Richard Nixon and Bob Hope. Drawn primarily from the extensive archival collections of The Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation, this exhibition will explore the rise and presidency of Abraham Lincoln on the human scale. Photographs from the period will be digitally enlarged to life-size and will be juxtaposed with the original photographs, glass negatives and daguerreotypes. Other objects on exhibition will further bring history to life including a Lincoln life mask, bronze sculptures, nineteenth-century ephemera, and Civil War artifacts. This exhibition is being organized by guest curator Peter W. Kunhardt, Jr., Assistant Director, The Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation, and Robin Garr, Director of Education, Bruce Museum. The exhibition is underwritten by Fieldpoint Private Bank & Trust; New England Land Company, Ltd; a Committee of Honor co-chaired by Tom Clephane and Nat Day; and the Charles M. and Deborah G. Royce Exhibition Fund.
