About the artist:
Joel Dawson has divided his time to return to his roots as an artist after more than two decades as a creative director to some of the best known names in the beauty industry.

About the sculptures:
Joel meticulously balances rocks one atop of another to create natural sculptures along the shoreline at
Greenwich Point — no glue, no rods, no pebbles… just balance.

About the photographs:
Wind and waves take away the transient shoreline gallery; the photographs help the images live on. Joel’s work has been called “unique in both subject and texture, capturing the majestic quality of man in harmony with nature.”

The Artist’s Story

The natural landscape of Greenwich Point is inspiring to many of its visitors. But every once in a while, the rocky scape along the shoreline is transformed into a sculpture garden of meticulously balanced rocks. Where do these mysterious constructions come from? They are the inspired work of Old Greenwich resident and designer Joel Dawson, who, after more than two decades as a creative director to some of the best known names in the beauty industry, has return to his roots as an artist.

Sculpting with stones found at Greenwich Point began as a fun, creative way for Dawson to spend time with his two children when they were very young. In the past couple of years, Dawson has taken stone sculpting to another level. In the early morning before sunrise or in the late afternoon when the light is at its best, he heads to the beach. Guided by the sun, the weather, the wind, and the tides, and inspired by the rock shapes, Dawson begins to construct – balancing one rock atop another. “There’s no glue, no rods, no pebbles… just balance,” Dawson explains. “It is about what you find and what you want to make of it. The magic is when you let the rock go, and it just stays…” he says on his Web site, www.greenwichpointrocks.com.

Owner and chocolatier Martine Coscia is opening the doors of her first retail shop, located at 99 Mill Street, Greenwich, Connecticut. The shop will be offering chocolate confections freshly made on premises as well as its line of fabulous, organic biscottini, and freshly brewed beverages which include locally roasted coffees, teas and to-die-for hot cocoas prepared in the traditional way wholly with milk and chocolate.

The tiny shop resembles the shape and size of a delectable bonbon and invites passers-by to stop in for a sweet and beverage to go. On most days, you will be able to peer through the chocolate kitchen door and see everything in the shop cases being homemade.

“I am very excited to embark on this new venture. Many of our existing customers have been waiting for us to have regular business hours so that they can stop by whenever their chocolate craving strikes. We also specialize in shipping chocolate gifts throughout the US and we make local deliveries for any occasion. During the holiday season, many out-of-state customers feel good about us fulfilling their custom orders for friends and relatives who live in Greenwich,” explains Martine Coscia, a native from Belgium.

The Little Chocolate Company is located at 99 Mill Street, Greenwich, CT 06830. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm and Friday-Saturday from 9:30 am to 8 pm. (Hours on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are 9:30 am to 4:30 pm). To contact The Little Chocolate Company, visit the Contact form at www.thelittlechocolatecompany.com or call the store at 203-531-6190.

Launched in 2008, The Little Chocolate Company operated purely as a chocolate kitchen catering to Connecticut Grown farmers’ markets, private functions and wholesale clients. Its products were (and are still) available at the web shop of www.thelittlechocolatecompany.com. The Little Chocolate Company handcrafts wedding favors, runs a birthday club program, and can be hired for culinary and wine parties that involve chocolate pairings. In February 2010, The Little Chocolate Company will celebrate the opening of its first retail shop located at 99 Mill Street, Greenwich, CT 06830.

New to the Cos Cob scene is Robeks, a fruit smoothie and healthy eats store next to the Cos Cob Hardware Store in the old Food Mart (soon to be CVS) shopping center. Some “all the rage” offerings are Açai (ah-sci-ee) Berry smoothies and green tea and wheat grass shots. The smoothies boast the ideal meal – just add protein to your custom-made smoothie (soy and whey proteins are available) and you’ve got a meal in a cup – perfect if you want a quick meal or snack that won’t slow you down. If you’re looking for something more substantial, try the sandwiches, wraps or salads. We tried the Açai Energizer smoothie made of açai, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple sherbet, apple juice, non-fat yogurt and soy protein – delicious. Be sure to ask for the $1 off coupon. Click here for menu

What a nice surprise to see a new French gourmet shop open on the corner of Elm and Mason Street, 41 Elm Street to be precise, where the former gift store, Tallow’s End was located. The gourmet shop is next door to Le Wine Shop, a wine store that has partnered with Jean-Louis of Jean-Louis Restaurant in a joint venture. The store offers cheese and charcuterie selections as well as breads and other delicacies. A Plat du Jour by JLToGo (Jean-Louis To Go) is featured daily. Eat-in, take home and catering services are available. They have an old-fashioned farm table that seats 10 guests and a marble counter with stools. Wi-Fi is available. Le Gourmet is a BYOB deli and Le Wine Shop next door offers many chilled white wines and beer. While waiting for our plat du jour, we had a wonderful Sauvignon Blanc, a 2007 L’Arpent des Vaudons from the Touraine region of France suggested by Alexandre Pichon. The wine is from a small-production hand-selected bottling – a bargain at less than $15. Before heading home be sure to walk across the street to Pierre Deux, a French country store featuring distinctive fabrics, antique and reproduction furniture, decorative accessories and unique gifts. The corner of Elm and Mason offers a true taste of France.

Don’t miss the A & P Fresh Grand Re-Opening Sale from Friday, August 8-14. The renovations were well worth the wait. It looks well…….Fresh. Take a virtual tour here – We especially like the Dansani Water 24 Pack on sale for $3.49 – thats less than 14 cents per bottle – what’s the catch you ask – well you need an additional purchase of $25 and the savings card which can be easily obtained and $25 adds up fast anyway. Also, check out the Lean Cuisine frozen entrees 5 for $10 – that’s only $2 each. Wash that down with a 12 pack coke fridge pack at 4 for $10 – that’s only 21 cents per can. Savings are bliss!

Tommy Vas of the New 96.7 THE COAST will be at the new A&P Fresh store, West Putnam Avenue this Saturday at 10am. Don’t miss the Charcuterie, Wet Cheese Bar and Fresh Fish direct from the Fulton Fish Market.
