Birds & Beans Coffee: Help songbirds by drinking bird-friendly coffee!!!
The Nature Store is proud to sell organic Birds & Beans Coffee available in a light, medium and dark roast. Every year many birds we know and love that spend summers in New England fly all the way to Latin America only to find winter habitats destroyed by sun-grown coffee farming. This is devastating to their ecosystem and threatens their very survival. By drinking Birds & Beans Coffee you are supporting farm families who grow their coffee organically under rustic shade canopy, ensuring that the birds of the northeast don’t disappear.
*       12 oz. Ground – $12.50 (with member discount – $11.25)
*       12 oz. Whole Bean – $12.00 (with member discount – $10.80)
Saturday, December 11, 2010
2:00pm

A Lecture & Film – About how the world’s rarest parrot inspired a book, a film, and a special friendship

2:00 pm – Presentation by Author, Sy Montgomery & Aaron Friedman, a teenage friend of the kakapo

3:00 pm – Book Signing & Reception with Sy & Aaron

3:30 pm – FILM: The Unnatural History of the Kakapo

One of two great books being sold on Saturday. Author, Sy Montgomery, warms up to a Kakapo on Codfish Island

The kakapo looks like a cross between a child’s plush toy and a Dr. Seuss character: a giant, 10-pound parakeet clad in shockingly soft, honey-scented feathers. It’s the most paradoxical of parrots: it can’t fly; it’s active only at night; and it nests underground. Yet it a bird so appealing that one early naturalist described it as “the most wondrous, perhaps, of all birds.”

Before the introduction of predators like rats, stoats, and cats, the huge, trusting, friendly, and curious parrot was common throughout New Zealand. By the 1950s, the species was thought to be extinct. Now the bird has won a second chance at survival–and has inspired a celebrated new book, a powerful documentary film, and a special friendship between a Connecticut 13-year-old and a nationally acclaimed author. Come celebrate all three on December 11 at a program that brings them together for a dramatic afternoon of film, fun, food, and friendship.

Bestselling author Sy Montgomery will show a PowerPoint presentation about her research expedition among the kakapo for her new book, KAKAPO RESCUE. Fewer than 90 kakapo were alive when the author made the trip in 2008, confined to the tiny, windswept Codfish Island off New Zealand’s south coast. Because the kakapo breeds intermittently, each nest is so precious that it is equipped with a video camera and a pair of “nest nannies” assigned to camp beside the underground nest to care for eggs and chicks when the mother exits on her nightly hunt for food.

Joining Sy at the podium is her 13-year-old friend, Aaron Friedman, a young conservationist from Wilton. “You could not imagine a more vulnerable creature that so desperately needs our protection and help to survive,” Aaron told the guests at his Bar Mitzvah earlier this fall–inspiring them to donate more than $2,500 towards the kakapo rescue efforts.

During an intermission with refreshments, copies of the new book will be available for sale and signing, a portion of which will be donated to kakapo conservation. Afterward, stay to view the breathtaking new 77-minute film, The Unnatural History of the Kakapo, which was made during Montgomery’s visit to Codfish Island by her colleague Scott Mouat.

This event will be a good chance to shop for holiday gifts in the Audubon Greenwich Nature Store. Both KAKAPO RESCUE and the author’s other recent book, BIRDOLOGY, will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

A suggested $10 donation will be sent to the Kakapo Recovery Project. Lecture: 2:00 pm / Reception: 3:00 pm / Film: 3:30-5:00 pm. Please RSVP to Jeff at 203-869-5272 x239 to save your seat for this unique and special presentation.

A stretch of St. Roch Avenue between Hamilton Avenue to Alexander Street has been cordoned off for the event. The feast raises money for the church while celebrating the Italian roots of many parishioners.

There will be a raffle for a Ford Fusion hybrid car as well as cash prizes. Vendors will be serving ethnic cuisine from Mexico, Spain and Italy in food tents at the Hamilton Avenue School parking lot.

Musical acts include an Italian accordion player, R&B group Billy and the Showmen and country group Gunsmoke. For children, there will be carnival rides, face painting, pony rides and a petting zoo.

On Saturday, there will be a tribute to Thomas Reale, a 90-year-old parishioner, known to many as the “mayor” of Chickahominy.

The festivities will culminate Sunday with a procession of the St. Roch statue through the streets of Chickahominy.

Proceeds from the event will go toward supporting repairs, renovations and other work at the 101-year-old church.
