SOS Japan Relief: An Event to Benefit Earthquake Victims

SATURDAY, JUNE 18TH — DAY AND NIGHT EVENTS

Batter up! On Saturday, June 18th, Bobby Valentine teams up with the Japanese American Association of New York and the Stamford Chamber of Commerce for a day of softball, good food and wine plus a good cause. The event is Stamford on the Sound (SOS) Japan Relief, and the cause is fundraising for some of the worst affected areas of Japan’s Tohoku Earthquake on March 11, 2011.

We all knew about the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, but despite the rebuilding efforts during the months since, the danger of the Fukushima power plant and continuing aftershocks present a significant need for ongoing support. Through the Japanese American Association of New York, the SOS Japan Relief effort will be sending 100% of the money raised to Japan for assistance.

The daytime portion of the event is free and open to the public, and set to take place in Commons Park in Stamford. It will feature a series of softball games, as well as food vendors and other game-day activities. Here’s the catch: the teams will consist of employees of the event’s company sponsors – a sight which, on its own, might be worth money to see. But that isn’t to say that pros won’t be in attendance as well – in addition to the definitive presence of Bobby Valentine, players such as former Yankees Daryl Strawberry and David Cone will be stepping up to the plate as event VIPs.

Speaking of plates, SOS Japan Relief continues its day with a dinner and auction from six to nine. This part of the event requires a ticket (available from StamfordOnTheSound.com), but it will be well worth it. Food is being donated by a large variety of popular Stamford and New York City restaurants, including the top-rated Japanese hotspot Donguri and The Capital Grille. The silent auction is also sure to be happy hunting grounds for attendees looking for a selection of items both coveted and unusual, appealing to enthused sports fans and less-devoted spectators alike. Some of these items, including Japanese ballplayer Ichiro Suzuki’s signed jersey and a stay at the world-renowned King Pacific Lodge in Canada, are available now online at CharityBuzz.com, which might benefit the most eager fans more than trying to catch them on the fly.

A Greenwich resident, Yumi Kuwana, who is from Japan, speaks from the heart: “I had to step up and do something for the Japanese victims that are unfortunately still in dire conditions. It is the worst natural disaster in Japan’s history and they need help. This is a great way to raise money for Japan while also having fun.”

The evening continues with wine and food tasting including dessert, and the guests will be able to enjoy a very tasteful (as well as tasty) progression from the hotdogs of the day’s ballgames. Attendees will have a great day at the ballgame while contributing to a vitally important cause.

Greenwich Town Party
Saturday, May 28, 2011

Tickets are on sale now for the first annual Greenwich Town Party, scheduled for Saturday, May 28th at the Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, which is the place to be this Memorial Day weekend. The all-day, 12-hour event for the Greenwich community offers an extraordinary array of activities and music for all ages: fun-filled kid’s activities from 10am to 2pm including The Fun Bus!, face painting, strolling magicians, caricaturists, inflatables, games, and arts & crafts; a music festival from 11am to 10pm featuring artists ranging from reggae to Motown and from rock to blues; and delicious food and drinks from an assortment of the hottest restaurants in town.

Rain or shine, the Greenwich Town Party will kick off at 10am with four hours of family-fun and at 11am the School of Rock Stars, a handpicked group of talented students from the Fairfield County performance-based music program for kids, kick off an incredible day of music. The Greenwich Town Party has something for everyone, bringing festival goers performances on two stages: a local stage featuring artist and musicians from Greenwich and neighboring towns, and a main stage hosting musical greats The Temptations, Toots & The Maytals, Little Feat, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, and a special performance by blues legend and five time Grammy Award Winner Buddy Guy.

Beginning at 2:00pm, an exciting group of area restaurants offer their signature dishes for purchase. Attendees may purchase and enjoy menu items from local restaurants including l’escale, Restaurant Jean-Louis, The Ginger Man, Fjord Fisheries, Pasta Vera and Asiana Café. “This family friendly town party will bring families, neighbors and fellow citizens together for a morning, afternoon and evening of pure fun and enjoyment,” says Scot Weicker of the SBWEventsGroup, the company contracted to manage the event. “It will have a unique flair of being an all-day family friendly event with 11 hours of incredible live music and great food. The Greenwich Town Party will be the hottest ticket in town, come May 28th, and with limited tickets available, this event is going to sell out very quickly.”

The Greenwich Town Party is an event by Greenwich residents, for Greenwich residents. Although a small portion of it is funded through ticket sales, generous donations from town residents provide the majority of funding, as well as gracious sponsorships by local business. Additional resident donations are also accepted through the event website to help fund the event. Residents are encouraged to “throw something in the pot” to support this incredible day of music, food, and family fun.

Due to park capacity, a limited number of tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, in person at the Greenwich Town Hall located at 101 Field Point Road (Mon-Fri 10am to 2pm), as well as at the Arch Street Teen Center located at 100 Arch Street (Tues/Thurs 3pm to 6pm), online at www.greenwichtownparty.com, or by calling (866) 558-4253. Prices are $40 for families with two adults and at least one child under 13 (10am to 2pm only—must enter before noon), and $40 per person for general all-day admission for attendees between the ages of 13-64 (10am to 10pm). For all-day admission, Seniors 65 and older and children under 13 are free but will still need to arrange for tickets in advance at either the Greenwich Town Hall or the Arch Street Teen Center.

For the local community, the Greenwich Town Party looks to be a spectacular event that hopes to become a Memorial Day Weekend tradition in Greenwich for many years. For additional event and ticket information, as well as details about VIP tickets, sponsorship opportunities, and how to make donations or other contributions, please visit the Greenwich Town Party website at www.GreenwichTownParty.com. The Greenwich Town Party is an alcohol-free event and there is no charge for parking in the surrounding public parking lots.
