2011 ‘Green Homes, Green Buildings’ Series:
‘PassivHaus’ & Passive Predecessors

2.0 Hours, 2.0 AIA Learning Units (HSW/SD)

Over the past 100 years, architects and designers have applied new techniques and technology in a search for ultra-low energy buildings that require little purchased energy for space heating or cooling. ‘Passive House’ design (Passivhaus in German) is a well-insulated, virtually air-tight building that is primarily heated by passive solar gain with an energy recovery ventilator providing balanced fresh air supply. The result is an impressive system that not only saves up to 90% of space heating costs, but also provides uniquely terrific indoor air quality.

In this presentation, Bill Bobenhausen (FAIA, CCS, LEED AP) will explore the jagged but educational path toward residential energy performance with an emphasis on the fundamentals – people, sun, temperature, cost, thermal delight, etc. Mr. Bobenhausen is the President of Sustainable Design Collaborative LLC in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. He has been a pioneering environmental architect, author, and educator for over 30 years and has authored three books including, The Optimum House (EDC Press), American Building: The Environmental Forces That Shape It with James Marston Fitch (Oxford University Press); Simplified Design of HVAC Systems (Wiley). He served as: President of the Metropolitan Solar Energy Society from 1979 until 1982; and Chairman of the USGBC New York Chapter (now Urban Green) in 2003.

Space is limited and RSVPs are required. $15 Donation for Audubon. Registration begins at 8:15 am with a light breakfast. The presentation will start at 9:00 am. (Be sure to arrive early to register for A.I.A. credit). To RSVP, email Jeff Cordulack at jcordulack@audubon.org or call 203-869-5272 x239.
