Bruce Museum

The Bruce Museum in Greenwich CT, will be presenting the second annual, “iCreate!”Teen Art Exhibition, from Saturday, June 4, 2011, through Sunday, June 26, 2011. The exhibition will be on view in the Bruce Museum’s Bantle Lecture Gallery and will feature approximately 30 prize-winning artworks by regional high school students. Organized by the Bruce Museum’s Youth@Bruce, the show will consist of a juried selection of two-dimensional pieces including paintings, drawings, mixed media, and hand-drawn or hand-painted digital works. Students must first register for the competition at www.youthbruce.com, and then will email three digital pieces to mlendenmann@brucemuseum.org. Youth@Bruce is working with the Bruce Museum’s Volunteer Program Manager Mary Ann Lendenmann, who will contact area high school art departments, distribute fliers, and update news on their “iCreate” Facebook group for those interested in participating. Last year over 160 entries were received from students throughout Fairfield and Westchester counties.

An independent three-member jury will be judging the work and will award cash prizes of $500, $250, and $100 for the top three entries. The original art of the top 30 winning entries will be mounted in the Museum’s Bantle Lecture Gallery. Digital images of all the artists’ entries will be shown in a slide-show, together with local high school students recorded music, presented on an iPad framed and mounted in the gallery.

AWESOME TREE CONTEST
To raise awareness of the importance of preserving and maintaining our trees, the Greenwich Tree Conservancy is sponsoring the third annual Awesome Tree Contest, along with the Town of Greenwich, the Garden Education Center, Audubon, Bruce Museum, Greenwich Land Trust, Greenwich Green and Clean and our libraries, with an awards ceremony to be held in November. Categories for the contest are as follows:

• Most Tenacious Tree
• Most Interesting Bark Tree
• Most Romantic Tree
• Best Tree House Tree
• Tree with Widest Canopy

Nomination forms are available at town  libraries, Town Hall, our co-sponsors or download from GTC website at greenwichtree.org and nominate an awesome tree.  Forms are due on Oct. 25th.

30 Super Stock cars and two Super Kid cars will race down Greenwich Avenue on Sunday, September 12, 2010 – sponsored by VivaPop and Miller Motorcars to benefit the United Way of Greenwich.

Race Details: 

The race is scheduled for Sunday, September 12, 2010 at Greenwich Avenue, starting at Starbucks. The race starts at 7:00am. Opening Ceremonies are at 9:00am.

The Awards Ceremony is held on Fawcett Place immediately after conclusion of the races.

Race Rules:

Local Race Director has the right to assign drivers to any and all cars.
Drivers must be 10 to 17 years old and weigh no more than 150 pounds.

Two Mile Swim

Awards to top 3 in each five year age group and to top 3 overall. Participants limited to one award.  Awards and refreshments following the event on Island Beach. Swimmers wearing wet suits will be INELIGIBLE for awards.

Preregistered swimmers should report to Greenwich harbor at 6:45 am for registration and boarding of Island Beach Ferry.  Boat leaves promptly at 7:30 am, swim begins at 8:30. Spectators may accompany swimmers. Race will be out and back from Island Beach.

The annual Sand Blast!, a sand sculpture festival,  is scheduled for Saturday, July 10 at 1:30 pm at Tod’s Point Beach, with a rain date of Sunday, July 11 at 2:30 pm. For rain date information, participants should call the Greenwich Parks & Recreation Activities HOTLINE at 203-618-7650.

Sponsored by the Greenwich Arts Council and the Town of Greenwich Department of Parks and Recreation with major support provided by First County Bank, Sand Blast! is a fun family event for all. There is no specific theme for sand sculptures, and participants are encouraged to indulge their imaginations enjoying the experience of creating art in the sand.
