For families who have decided to stay home during the February school vacation week and are wondering what to do with the children, Bush-Holley Historic Site Vacation Week Workshops may be just the answer. Educators at the National Historic Landmark site, located at 39 Strickland Road are planning a three-day commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln for first through sixth graders. Children will learn about the life and legacy of our 16th president through a variety of programs and activities held in the Vanderbilt Education Center.

Programs will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, February 11 and 12. On Friday, February 13 the whole family is invited to attend a live performance and a celebration of Lincoln’s life and accomplishments. The cost is $15 per child and $10 per member child for each day.

On Wednesday, February 11, a workshop called “Lincoln’s Youth” will reveal for children how our 16th president spent his childhood years on the frontier, helping his father to clear land, chop wood and build. Greenwich architect Carl Mecky will pose as President Lincoln and lead children in the building of a model log cabin using natural wood and glue. Learn about different kinds of wood and cabin structures built in the early 1800s.

On Thursday, February 12, in the workshop “Honoring Lincoln,” children will design and emboss a large coin from thin metal in the style of the Lincoln penny, which was introduced by the U.S. Treasury in 1909 in honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth. They will also create their own design based on the $5 bill, and will have fun posing as Lincoln in costume for a photograph keepsakes.

On Friday, February 13, Bush-Holley Historic Site will present “From Railsplitter to President”, a performance by Lou Del Bianco as Abraham Lincoln. In a 45-minute interactive dramatic program, the actor-storyteller portrays Lincoln as Civil War President, frontiersman and storyteller. Lincoln’s values…..honesty, love of family, thirst for education, sense of justice and perseverance are demonstrated in this dynamic presentation. The whole family is invited to attend the program which will be followed by a Lincoln puppet-making activity and birthday cake.
