New York Times best-selling author Sally Bedell Smith to speak at Greenwich Library on January 12 at 7 p.m. in the Cole Auditorium, to discuss her newest biography, Elizabeth the Queen.

From the moment of her ascension to the throne in 1952 at the age of twenty-five, Queen Elizabeth II has been the object of unparalleled scrutiny. But through the fog of glamour and gossip, Smith asks how well do we really know the world’s most famous monarch? Drawing on hundreds of interviews and never-before-revealed documents, Smith pulls back the curtain to show in intimate detail the public and private lives of Queen Elizabeth II, who has led her country and Commonwealth through the wars and upheavals of the last sixty years with unparalleled composure, intelligence, and grace.

Compulsively readable and extensively researched, Elizabeth the Queen is a close-up view of a woman we’ve known only from a distance, illuminating the lively personality, sense of humor, and canny intelligence with which she meets the most demanding work and family obligations. It is also a fascinating window into life at the center of the last great monarchy.

Tom Brokaw said of the book, “Elizabeth the Queen is an engaging, insightful, and altogether entertaining journey through the life and trials of the world’s most beloved monarch. By the end of Sally Bedell Smith’s winning book, I felt as if I had a new friend in Buckingham Palace.”

Smith is the author of bestselling biographies of William S. Paley; Pamela Harriman; Diana, Princess of Wales; John and Jacqueline Kennedy; and Bill and Hillary Clinton. A contributing editor at Vanity Fair since 1996, she previously worked at Time and The New York Times, where she was a cultural news reporter.

Over the course of a decade, Homans researched and wrote this richly drawn story of the evolution of ballet from its origins to the present. Drawing on extensive archival research and interviews conducted in Paris, Copenhagen, London, New York, St. Petersburg and Moscow, Apollo’s Angels shows that ballet was not only artistic, but political: bound up with the fate of kings, courts and states.

The Chanel suit: it is one of the 20th century’s most iconic garments. Seen by many as the epitome of style, its classic silhouette is instantly recognizable, and yet owning one is, for most women, only a dream.

Author and curator Charlotte Smith will return to Perrot to discuss her latest book, Dreaming of Chanel, which reveals the backdrop and dreams attached to pieces of clothing, whether they are made by famous designers or unknown dressmakers.

October 14, 2011
7:00pm-9:00pm

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear and meet the best selling American-born humorist Bill Bryson. Traveling from London, Mr. Bryson will talk about his current book, AT HOME, as well as others he has written including NOTES FROM A SMALL ISLAND, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE THUNDERBOLT KID, A WALK IN THE WOODS (THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL), I’M A STRANGER HERE MYSELF, A SHORT HISTORY OF NEARLY EVERYTHING, IN A SUNBURNED COUNTRY and BRYSON’S DICTIONARY OF TROUBLESOME WORDS. Author Bryson is known for exploring far-flung places. His books cover the Australian outback, his childhood in Indiana, the Appalachian Trail-even the history of the universe. He received the prestigious Aventis prize for Science Books (Stephen Hawking was another recipient) for A Short History of Nearly Everything. Bryson found inspiration for his most recent book after a hike through his own old Victorian house in England. At Home: A Short History of Private Life, released in 2010, is a book which Bryson says uses his own house as a jumping off point to explore the general history of domesticity everywhere.

Among his bestselling titles are A Walk in the Woods, Notes from a Small Island, In a Sunburned Country, Bryson’s Dictionary of Troublesome Words, and The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid. Bryson lives in England with his wife and children.

Bill Bryson has one of the funniest, liveliest, and most inquisitive minds on the planet, and he is a master at turning the seemingly isolated or mundane fact into an occasion for the most diverting exposition imaginable. The Greenwich Library is his kickoff venue on a tour of the US this fall!

Mr. Bryson will answer questions, chat with you afterwards and sign copies of his book that will be available for sale through Diane’s books.
