The popular Bruce Museum Outdoor Arts Festival, which takes place on the grounds of the Museum, is a juried event featuring more than 85 artists from 20 different states across the country. Paintings, drawings, original prints, mixed media pieces, sculpture and photography are all available for purchase directly from the artists.

From 12 noon to 4 pm both days there will be live music by the band Ubuntu, a rootsy rock ensemble, as well as classical solo guitarists Ed Wright and Annalisa Ewald. A children’s drawing contest and family art activities are offered free inside the Museum, and a variety of food choices will be available outside. At 2 pm both days, pastel artist Carol Boucher will give a pastel drawing demonstartion and will invite audience participation. Her booth is set up right in front of the Museum entrance.

 Audubon At Home Art Lecture and Lunch Series

 John James Audubon is widely considered one of the greatest naturalists and artists of all time. Since 1823, when Robert Havell created the first copies of John James Audubon’s watercolor images of the Birds of America, people have marveled at their beauty and spent millions to own them. Audubon’s original watercolors are now a priceless part of America’s cultural heritage, kept under the strictest of curatorial conditions at the New-York Historical Society. However, over the past 190 years, various reproductions of the Havell series have been created. Each version has served a specific purpose for bird lovers and art lovers alike, as well as for the art market. While in 1850 a collector could buy the complete Havell portfolio for about $1,000, in December 2010 a bound edition sold at auction for approximately $10 million!

In 2010, renowned naturalist art expert and dealer, Joel Oppenheimer, obtained exclusive rights from the New-York Historical Society to reproduce an historic issue of the complete watercolor works of John James Audubon’s Birds of America. This first edition marks a unique opportunity for collectors to own actual-size fine art prints of Audubon’s original watercolors. By mutual agreement between the New-York Historical Society and Oppenheimer Editions, this exclusive printing will not be duplicated for a minimum of seventy-five years. Utilizing the most advanced imaging technology available, the prints are made with archival pigments on acid-free imported watercolor paper. As a result, the images are virtual recreations of the originals in the Historical Society’s famous Audubon collection.

The high resolution scans created for these editions will be the first to be included in a new digital archive of Audubon’s watercolors, “a resource for both conservators and art historians,” notes Louise Mirrer, President and CEO of the New-York Historical Society. “This edition will also allow more of Audubon’s audience to witness these great images in person.”

To learn more about John James Audubon, his ornithology, and his art, attend the opening of the Audubon At Home Art Lecture and Lunch Series. Joel Oppenheimer will present an insightful lecture on Audubon’s finest pieces, guide you through the various editions that have been created, highlighting their significance and value, and discuss the watercolors themselves and his process that has made them available to collectors on a very limited edition. Examples of the Oppenheimer Audubon watercolors collection will be on display and available for purchase before and after the lecture and lunch.

The Greenwich Art Society presents its annual juried exhibition. Works in all media are displayed, and the selection of art for exhibition and cash prizes will be made by a nationally distinguished juror. This year’s juror is Nora Lawrence, Assistant Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, NYC. All works in the exhibition will be for sale.

Exhibit: June 23 – August 11, 2010

Seeking to walk in the footsteps of the American Impressionist art colony painters, Ms. Gordon, a Cos Cob resident sets her paintings in lush gardens and along local shores, and reinterprets these artists’ visions, incorporating European Impressionist, Japanese and graphic influences in her work. Her varied subject matter chronicles the passage of time, the few remaining farms in town, the ever-changing movement at Greenwich Point, and the course of the sun in its infinitely subtle gradations of shadow and light.

An opening reception for the exhibition is planned for June 24 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., and Ms. Gordon will host an on-site gallery talk on July 11 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. All works featured in “Greenwich Revisited: One Hundred Summers Later” will be available for purchase.

An exhibition of more than 24 pastels and oil paintings entitled “Color within Color – Landscape and Still Life” opened January 11, 2010 at The Gallery at Greenwich Tavern. The exhibit showcases the work of Rowayton artist Betty Ball.

Ball has been working professionally as a designer and a fine artist since receiving her BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design in 1978. She exhibits her work in local galleries in the northeast, and has won numerous awards for both her fine art and design. When not painting en plein air, Ball works in her Rowayton studio.

Greenwich Tavern owners Moe Gad and Rafael Palomino agree that combining great food with beautiful artwork is a winning combination. With the assistance of Leslie Mueller, a local designer, artist and host of Cablevision’s award winning program “Art & Style”, The Gallery has been created within Greenwich Tavern to showcase the artwork of local artists.
