of Dawson’s archival quality black & white and color prints.

About the artist:
Joel Dawson has divided his time to return to his roots as an artist after more than two decades as a creative director to some of the best known names in the beauty industry.

About the sculptures:
Joel meticulously balances rocks one atop of another to create natural sculptures along the shoreline at
Greenwich Point — no glue, no rods, no pebbles… just balance.

About the photographs:
Wind and waves take away the transient shoreline gallery; the photographs help the images live on. Joel’s work has been called “unique in both subject and texture, capturing the majestic quality of man in harmony with nature.”

Prints: Available at the gallery or by contacting Marcos Torno, owner of Images, at 203-637-4193.

The Artist’s Story

The natural landscape of Greenwich Point is inspiring to many of its visitors. But every once in a while, the rocky scape along the shoreline is transformed into a sculpture garden of meticulously balanced rocks. Where do these mysterious constructions come from? They are the inspired work of Old Greenwich resident and designer Joel Dawson, who, after more than two decades as a creative director to some of the best known names in the beauty industry, has return to his roots as an artist.

Sculpting with stones found at Greenwich Point began as a fun, creative way for Dawson to spend time with his two children when they were very young. In the past couple of years, Dawson has taken stone sculpting to another level. In the early morning before sunrise or in the late afternoon when the light is at its best, he heads to the beach. Guided by the sun, the weather, the wind, and the tides, and inspired by the rock shapes, Dawson begins to construct – balancing one rock atop another. “There’s no glue, no rods, no pebbles… just balance,” Dawson explains. “It is about what you find and what you want to make of it. The magic is when you let the rock go, and it just stays…” he says on his Web site, www.greenwichpointrocks.com.

The exhibit showcases the work of Rowayton artist Betty Ball.

Ball has been working professionally as a designer and a fine artist since receiving her BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design in 1978. She exhibits her work in local galleries in the northeast, and has won numerous awards for both her fine art and design. When not painting en plein air, Ball works in her Rowayton studio.

Greenwich Tavern owners Moe Gad and Rafael Palomino agree that combining great food with beautiful artwork is a winning combination. With the assistance of Leslie Mueller, a local designer, artist and host of Cablevision’s award winning program “Art & Style”, The Gallery has been created within Greenwich Tavern to showcase the artwork of local artists.

The “Color Within Color” exhibit will run through February 28. Gallery hours are 11:30am – 10:00pm daily. The Gallery is located at 1392 East Putnam Avenue and can be contacted by calling 203.698.9033 or visiting http://greenwichtavern.net/.

“I am particularly fascinated with the layers of color that define shape and create the beautiful atmospheres that I find so compelling in my subjects. By moving from landscape to still life, and from paint to pastel, I am able to see each with a fresh vision. As a landscape painter, I have been fortunate to have access to the rich natural beauty of local land trust properties. The landscapes of Darien, New Canaan, and Rowayton are featured in this show; as well as the fields of Shelburne Farms, Vermont.” Betty Ball

About Greenwich Tavern
Greenwich Tavern comes from a desire to offer an affordable, comfort-style dining experience. An American menu and lively, comfortable bar will take guests back to the days when this location was a Greenwich institution. Chef Rafael Palomino’s menu offers traditional American dishes using fresh, high-quality ingredients, and combine a ‘down-home’ sensibility with a luxury flair. Much of the menu emphasizes small-plates and sharable items. Signature dishes include caramelized salmon, grandma’s mac’n cheese, and braised Angus short ribs.

The New York Times critic Patricia Brooks recently gave the Greenwich Tavern an “Excellent” rating.

Located in Old Greenwich, CT at 1392 East Putnam Avenue, it is recommended to call for a reservation 203.698.9033 or go to http://greenwichtavern.net/

They are not only great investments but decorative as well as functional. These are not mere sketches done randomly, rather, they are strokes done by creative hands. Paintings have the power to unknowingly attract you. They are one of the most beautiful creations of man done with skill and passion.

Original paintings have the power to enhance the space of any home decor, as living rooms, dining rooms, dens, game rooms, and master bedrooms come to life with wall art. An original oil painting makes a great conversation piece and is a joy that lasts a lifetime – not to mention the aspect of possessing an investment that continues to grow with age and attachment.

A large seascape, such as Gloucester Dock hung prominently over a fireplace lends sophistication and elegance to a living room, whether your furnishings are modern or traditional.

Otis Pierce Cook (1900-1980) was an American painter born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was mostly famous for his oil paintings of coastal and landscape scenes and studied under Emil Gruppe of Gloucester. He lived much of his life in Rockport, MA and Cape Ann was the focal point for much of his work. He was a member of the Rockport Art Association. In 1935, Cook had an art gallery on Bearskin Neck in Rockport and was a member of The Rockport Art Galleries along with William Lester Stevens, Joseph Eliot Enneking, Arthur J. Hammond, Marian Parkhust Sloane and Frank M. Rines.

His paintings are in the permanent collections of major museums and private collections across America, including in the Springfield Museum of Art.

Twachtman and J. Alden Weir, but there are other famous artists who were very much a part of the colony. In the Bruce Museum’s exhibition catalog, “The Ochtmans of Cos Cob”, curator Susan G. Larkin writes “Leonard and Mina Fonda Ochtman settled in Greenwich immediately after their marriage in 1891. For the next eighty years, the Ochtmans would be central to the community’s cultural life. The Cos Cob Art Colony, the Greenwich Society of Artists, the Bruce Museum: all benefited from the Ochtmans’ involvement. Their significance extends beyond Greenwich however. Leonard Ochtman was one of the most famous American landscape painters at the turn of the century. Dorothy Ochtman’s (Dorothy is Leonard’s daughter) vibrant still lifes and intimate portraits convey the beauty of a vanished, self-contained world.” We had been gathering material for an article on the Cos Cob Colony and coincidently received an e-mail today from gallery owner Tom Pikul of Bantam Fine Arts in Bantam, Connecticut letting us know of his Leonard and Dorothy Ochtman paintings. Click here for details of the Leonard Ochtman paintings and here for Dorothy Ochtman. To learn more about the Ochtmans, a must-read is Susan Larson’s book “The Cos Cob Art Colony: Impressionists on the Connecticut Shore” available at the Bruce Museum, The Historical Society of the Town of Greenwich, Amazon.com and many bookstores.
