SWIRL New York to Greenwich

SWIRL PERFORMS AUGUST 6TH AT THE BITTER END IN NEW YORK

SWIRL performs Thursday nights in Greenwich at Barcelona

Reinvented rockers in SWIRL find fans in foodies and fashionistas

SWIRLOn Friday, August 6, 2010 SWIRL moves to the main stage for a special 8:00 p.m. set at The Bitter End in New York. The duo will perform ten compositions from their upcoming release “Orfanos”. SWIRL draws comparisons to Ottmar Liebert and Rodrigo & Gabriella.

SWIRL is Greek-born Jimmy Vasilopoulos on acoustic guitar and an athletic, six-foot ten inch bald percussionist called Aldo. Vasilopoulos is a gifted self-taught guitarist, composer, and – until further notice – also a public school teacher in Bronx, NY. Aldo strongly resembles Peter Garrett, the bald, seven foot tall Australian politician and lead singer of Midnight Oil, and, like Garrett, Aldo is also an attorney (given name Alan Johnson). Jimmy and Aldo are old friends and bandmates from long ago who have together logged thousands of miles driving to distant gigs, traversing the Mediterranean, and three years sharing the same residence in Byram, CT.

Upon return from a Mediterranean tour/sabbatical on July 28th, SWIRL will resume performing four nights every week as follows: Wednesday nights at Aurora of Rye NY, Thursday nights at Barcelona Wine Bar of Greenwich CT, Friday nights at Barcelona Wine Bar of Norwalk CT, and Sunday evenings at Barcelona of Stamford. Recordings of SWIRL’s music can be heard on-line, for free, at www.swirlmusic.com (click ‘play’).

The Bitter End is located at 147 Bleecker Street in New York. Tel. (212) 673-7030 Admission is $7.

SWIRL is best enjoyed as a live act. Beautiful, soul-searching Egyptian-flavored melodies inspire reflection and percussive flamenco guitar solos inspire dance. Having a drummer – especially a good one like Aldo –keeps things interesting. Aldo simultaneously plays two contrasting percussion parts, each with one hand – a feat that must be seen to understand that normally two drummers would be required. Glory for Aldo is short-lived; Vasilopoulos’ darkly romantic melodies, effortlessly played over an electronically-looped accompanying guitar part of his own creation, entrance and beguile listeners into believing that this is how all music is made. It is not. SWIRL draws comparisons to Ottmar Liebert and Rodrigo & Gabriella, the Mexican born duo whose rampaging flamenco interpretations of rock songs have sold over 1 million copies and led to a recent appearance at the White House.
