Pick Your Own At Blueberry Farms

Jones Blueberry Farms is a great place to bring the whole family or a group of friends to pick  your own blueberries. While not restricted to blueberry season or to growing blueberries, Jones Blueberry Farms draws the attention of local patrons and visitors alike during the high picking season for blueberries, July and August. If you are planning a trip up the Connecticut coast, a great stop is Jones Farms for an excellent family time gathering up blueberries at  this well known pick your own center in Shelton, CT. The family owned farm since the middle of the 19th century offers lots of history and family pride mixed in with the soil. Not too far down the line on the Post Road in Guilford, CT is Bishop Orchards. Here seasonal pickings are considerable. Bishops has plenty to fill your bucket at the family’s 320 acre orchard, land that has been in the family for more than one hundred years. Bishops is open daily until 7 p.m. which should certainly accommodate almost anyone’s summer vacation schedule. While you are there don’t miss the chance to sample other produce available from the farm stand, Bishops also sells pies, cookies, breads and pastries with their own fresh farm taste. You can also bring back beverages to friends and relatives in the form of locally produced cider, hard cider and wines. Here’s a recipe for a fast and easy blueberry pie from Cooks.com:

FAST AND EASY BLUEBERRY PIE  

1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. cornstarch
1 c. water
4 tbsp. dry blackberry Jello
1 qt. blueberries
Pie shell
Put sugar, cornstarch, and water into saucepan and boil until clear and thick. Add 4 tablespoons dry blackberry Jello. Chill. Add 1 quart blueberries. Stir and put in pie shell or roll crust to fit cookie sheet and bake. Put in refrigerator and chill. Great to take on picnics.
